Wall St. Faces Fair Trade

October 10, 2011

Here in the US feelings are running high on Wall Street - the financial heart of the nation and, some would argue, the world.

What we're seeing is a very real demonstration of how the majority of workers on our planet feel. Employees the world over are caught in traps of having to work for employers who are unfair in their dealings.

Nobody wants to see large corporations topple - where would the jobs be then? What people need to see and experience in practice is fairness at all levels. The CEO, CFO, et al certainly can expect a higher salary than the shop floor worker but, when opportunity for and relative quality of increments, bonuses, profit sharing, etc. for the CEO outstrip those for the technician eventually there will be trouble ... and so 'Occupy Wall Street' has taken hold.

wall st fair tradeThose of us involved in the Fair Trade Movement are committed to pursuing fairness at all levels of production and trading of goods. These are basic principles that, when taken seriously by employers, can turn around the lives of employees and their communities whilst still adding to a healthy 'bottom line' for a company and its shareholders.

Thankfully a growing number of companies in the US and elsewhere are integrating fairtrade principles into their codes of Best Practise. Here are a few listed by CNN Money:

  1. SAS
  2. Boston Consulting Group
  3. Wegmans Food Markets
  4. Google
  5. NetApp
  1. Zappos.com
  2. Camden Property Trust
  3. Nugget Market
  4. REI
  5. Dreamworks

The Ethical Trading Initiative held the 'World Day for Decent Work' last week - there is a growing movement to ensure that we all experience a fair return for our work together, rather than an unfair return at the expense of another. Essentially we're choosing the Golden Rule 'Do to others as you would have them do to you.'  Matthew 7:12 - The Bible

What are the companies you know of who are committed to fairness in all their dealings? Share these and any thoughts on the Wall St. scenario below.
