Fair Trade on the Fly - part 2 - Nasma

February 6, 2012

Well it's been a tense time for everyone here at Motif! When Nasma, one of our wonderful sewers, didn't come to work we were all concerned. Although now home again in the 'safe place' of Motif, many issues remain for her:

no security

After the birth of her 2nd child, a surviving twin girl, Nasma's husband left and married again. That was Jan 2010. Last week she heard where they were living and set out with her parents, uncle and children to find him. In Bangladesh there is only a scant social welfare system, and Nasma needs security for her kids. Sadly, we were sure the only thing she'd get was a beating.

Nasma returned and told us that on seeing them together she flew into such a rage that it was she who beat her husband! (I must confess to a little cheer there!) Even neighbours called shame on him for leaving such a beautiful wife and kids.

no voice

It was decided he'd return to Nasma - just a question of $25 rent to clear before leaving. Her uncle delivered the money and the next day he fled with the other wife! Nasma's in-laws were embarrassed at their son's behaviour so took her and the children to the family home (bari) 90 miles away ... where there was no work for her or school for her son to attend ... but, plenty of domestic tasks to help with.

no control

A few days ago Nasma turned up at Motif again, much to everyone's relief. Seems her husband went to his bari with his 2nd wife declaring he'd look after them both and his kids ... and promptly sent Nasma back to Dhaka with her children, promising to send support.

fairtrade gives security, voice and control

It was a precious reunion for us as Nasma announced she will always be with Motif because she's loved by us and knows security here not found with her husband. As for us, we are so thankful that as orders increase so will the provision for many more to know the love and security found here in our Motif family.

Nasma is still in a fragile position - if it is your practise please remember her, and so many women in her position, in prayer and in promoting fairtrade. Fair Trade truly is a major way of building security, voice and control for vulnerable women.

PS: When Nasma agreed that her story could be shared, she also wanted to pass on thanks to all who buy Motif goods, ensuring security for son Raju, daughter Tinni and herself ... and I do too ... THANK YOU!
